SAMUEL SALCEDO - SOLO SHOW
Press release
In this individual exhibition by Samuel Salcedo one can see a selection of works of exceptional quality, which convey in a perfect way the unique artistic language of the artist from Barcelona. As one can see in each of these pieces, the artist finds himself at a culminating moment in his career, both creatively and formally.
In the work of Salcedo, there is an accidental part that is welcomed by the artist. Uncontrollable imperfections that have a parallel with the marks that life leaves on our faces. Formal marks and deeper wounds that form our biography in a spiritual and physical way and transmit to others how we apparently are in our staging.
The heads made in epoxy resin that look at each other are also imperfect to some extent. Six heads with different expressions, showing different emotions: relaxed, asleep, erect or reclined, containing an exhalation ... these are a group of individualities that require a curious and calm look to be able to comprehend the subtle relationships that are established between them.
In this exhibition we also see two bookshelves filled with wooden books, defiled, as if the stories they transmit had been mixed creating a certain disorder or chaos within their shelves that delimit their formal habitat.
The black faces hanging from the walls are molded with cast sand in an attempt to distinguish each of them even more. These are faces with kind expressions but their surface is rough, as if time and events had softened the gesture but not the surface.
On another scale, smaller and more essential, Salcedo presents his series "Toy Land": 7 characters in different circumstances but with solitude as a common denominator. They are a group within the exhibition, but each one tries to show their individuality in a sometimes extravagant way, sometimes showing a certain indifference towards the viewer.
3 aluminum spheres with expressive faces, large and apparently unstable. As if they wanted to show us that the idea of security and stability is only a mirage and at any moment the physical laws of the sphere can be asserted, propelling them to another space, another position, another place.
We will also find in this exhibition the cast iron work entitled "Iron Made", which emerges solemnly from the ground, with a vigorous neck and a hieratic expression. It is the most individualistic piece of the exhibition, as if the noble material was creating a distance from the rest of the works, alienating the sculpture but granting it at the same time a certain privilege of singularity.
