Echoes of Existence

I seek in myself, through the layers of time, the meaning of each gesture. I find myself, without exception, drawing the same lines, modeling the same shape in clay, sculpting the same stone.
I constantly return to the same primordial ideas as if the dozens of works were not yet enough to explain my feelings. Dissatisfaction dwells in me and leads me to repeatedly search the material for the realization of these ideas without, however, being able to glimpse its conclusion.
During the process, in the creative mental phase or in the physical and laborious phase, I am rewarded with brief moments of lucidity and in these few seconds I feel full satisfaction in the execution of the work, brief seconds that give meaning to my existence.

I believe that the fact of being born in a region predominantly dedicated to the extraction and transformation of stone influenced my artistic career, that is, in the preference of the material, the stone.
This opportunity allowed me, from a young age, the perception of the hardness and effort that is to work the stone, in the most varied forms, from industrial stone, artistic stone and sculpture. In this area I met and lived with great stonemasons, who taught me to know the characteristics of the different stones and the best way to work them.
In 1985 I met the one who would become my great sculptor. The sculptor Pedro Anjos Teixeira accepted me as his student and during five years of private classes he taught me drawing, modeling clay figures, plaster modeling and a multitude of handmade details that is only possible through direct testimony. In addition to practical teaching, Mestre Anjos Teixeira, by believing in my abilities, created in me the confidence I needed to start an individual journey in sculpture.

For more than twenty years I have been developing a path, I would say solitary, of figurative nature, expressing myself through the human figure and preferably using stone, marble, bronze and recently resin.
The human body has always fascinated me in its varied forms, attitudes and expressions, and through it I try to grasp in the material the essence of the idea.
Sculpture is like many arts, a long process, technically demanding and also physically hard. During the time it takes to execute a stone sculpture, weeks or months, it will be questionable whether the initial idea remains, however, if the first approach is carried out safely and firmly, the only possible direction to materialize the sculpture is recorded in the initial strokes.

The conception of the work is subjective, I cannot explain it rationally. In the vast majority of cases the idea grows in my mind for a long time, going through several formal states, until arriving at a compromise result in terms of dimensions and materials, other times, passing by a stone block, I catch a glimpse of a form imprisoned within her and immediately draw the form into her so as not to lose the idea. I’ll come back later to work on it.
All sculptures have a different relationship with me. Some pieces reach their climax in the conception phase and, for various reasons, fade away, others begin as a low heat, causing great moments of pure ecstasy within me before the end result.
These last lines lead me to conclude that my mastery of the work is relative and fleeting, but it is precisely this uncertainty that fuels the flame of creativity.

At the moment after its completion, there is, for my part, a certain ambiguity. I need to keep the sculptures under my eyes for a while as they are part of a moment in my life, however I also feel satisfaction when a certain sculpture finds its place with someone who knows how to appreciate it.
In society, some of us artists have the need and the will to approach the imposed limits and even to overcome them. In this incessant search for the new, the original, the different, new forms of expression are emerging in any of the arts, whether music, film, painting, sculpture, etc. that will be assimilated by society contributing to its evolution.
I don’t know what the role of sculpture will be in the future, however, today we know who we were in the past due to the legacy left by so many artists.
