Esta exposición de fotografía muestra gran parte de la serie Vector Portraits del artista Andrew Bush (St. Louis, Missouri, 1956) en la que se presentan más de 40 piezas en varios tamaños. Coqueteando con las fronteras del periodismo, la antropología y el arte conceptual, Bush retrata, durante casi toda la década de los noventa, decenas de conductores que transitan por la ciudad de Los Angeles y alrededores en plena carrera. Para ello se sirve de una cámara analógica de medio formato, montada en el asiento del copiloto de su coche y de un potente flash especialmente adaptados para conseguir el máximo detalle posible a la hora de cazar a los conductores colindantes, siempre de perfil, siempre en movimiento y siempre en dirección oeste para aprovechar el sol. El modus operandi es sencillo, cuando Bush detecta un coche que se adapta a las necesidades del momento o cautiva su interés de manera concreta, se sitúa a su lado, iguala velocidad y le dispara. El propósito es evidenciar las fisuras existentes entre lo público y lo privado, el aquí y el ahora, la posibilidad de espionaje hacia “el otro en su mundo” —sin olvidar que una vez dentro del coche solemos guardar la máscara social en la guantera— en un contexto en el que la vista al frente en la carretera, la velocidad y el hermetismo del vehículo, como extensión de tu propia casa, propician una ilusión de privacidad infranqueable y un desdén hacia el voyeurismo potencial, pero al fin y al cabo de una elocuencia visual que Bush, con esta serie, pone en evidencia de manera tajante. Esta serie nos muestra, con todo lujo de detalles, que por mucho que uno conduzca a gran velocidad y por mucho que se crea resguardado por ese no-lugar perpetuo y cobijado por las paredes de su vehículo, en realidad se está exponiendo a la mirada del otro en todo momento de la manera más cruda, primero porque nadie se lo espera y segundo porque nadie lo hace: sólo falta el voyeur. Bush amplia las imágenes resultantes a gran formato y, aunque la altura de las mismas es idéntica en todas, su anchura depende siempre del encuadre conseguido por las tomas, en gran medida azarosas puesto que nunca sabe exactamente qué es lo que la cámara está encuadrando. Esta búsqueda del retrato periférico, de la recolección de datos a partir de los objetos, en el caso de Vector Portraits, a partir del vehículo como extensión de la persona, ha sido siempre el leit motiv de la obra de Bush. El tránsito del objeto entre lo público y lo privado y viceversa, y como, a partir de esa trasmutación ontológica y aparentemente banal, florece de repente un retrato personal mucho más certero que lo que pretendemos mostrar cuando salimos a la calle. Bush, amante de esos detalles escurridizos y sólo aptos para voyeurs refinados, magnifica esas realidades anecdóticas y las coloca en el cristal del microscopio: ha retratado, con ampliaciones al máximo, todo tipo de tarjetas de visita de todo tipo de personas, incluídos famosos, en la serie Portraits Business Cards (1998), se ha ido al rastro más importante de Los Angeles en Prop Portraits (2000) para retratar in situ compradores que posan orgullosos con los objetos que acaban de adquirir que, por el contexto todavía pertenecen al rastro y al mismo tiempo pertenecen también a alguien concreto, que los re-define y que, éstos a su vez, sirven de etiqueta para sus nuevos dueños; asímismo, con la serie Envelopes (1994-95) exploró todo tipo de sobres, una vez más, lo que se quiere mostrar y lo que se pretende esconder; no en balde, su primera obra importante fue la serie Bonnettstown (1986), retrato indirecto de los habitantes de una mansión irlandesa a partir de un recorrido fotográfico a través de sus estancias solitarias. Andrew Bush, vive y trabaja en Los Angeles y lleva exponiendo desde 1984 en exposiciones colectivas y, desde 1986, en individuales. Su obra está presente en las colecciones de museos como el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York, el San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, en San Francisco, el Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres, el International Centre of Photography de Nueva York o Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art (LACMA), en Los Angeles, entre muchos otros.
