Information

This photographic exhibition shows an important part of the series, Vector Portraits, by the artist Andrew Bush (St. Louis, Missouri 1956) in which he presents more than 40 pieces in various sizes. Flirting with the frontiers of journalism, anthroplogy and conceptual art, Bush portrays - almost throughout the whole of the nineties – dozens of drivers travelling in top gear through the city of Los Angeles and the surrounding area. For this he uses a medium sized analogical camera, set up in the co-pilot’s seat of his car as well as a strong flash, both especially adapted to obtain the greatest possible detail when chasing the drivers next to him, always in profile, always on the move and always travelling westwards to take advantage of the sunlight. The modus operandi is simple: when Bush detects a car which suits his requirements at the time or catches his interest in a definite way, he gets up next to them, travels at the same speed and shoots. The aim is to show up the cracks which exist between the public and the private, the here and now, the possibility of spying on “the other person in his world” – not forgetting that once we are in the car we tend to keep the social mask in the glove compartment – in a context in which the view ahead on the road, the speed and hermetic nature of the vehicle, as an extensión of your own home, give one an illusion of unbreakable privacy and a disdain of potencial voyeurism, but in the end an illusion of visual eloquence which Bush, with this series, makes clear in an unmistakable way. This series shows us, with a richness of details, that however one may drive at a high speed and however much one may feel protected by by this perpetual no-place sheltered by the walls of one’s vehicle, in reality one is constantly putting oneself in the gaze of others in the most crude way, firstly because no-one is expecting it and secondly becxause no-one does it: the only thing missing is the voyeur. Bush amplifies the resulting images into a large dimension and, although the height is the same in all, their width always depends on the framing achieved by the shots, in large part hazardous because no-one ever knows exactly what it is that the camera is framing. This search for the peripheric portrait, for the collecting of facts based on objects, in the case of Vector Portraits, using the vehicle as an extensión of the person, has always been Bush’s leit motif. The movement of the object between public and private and viceversa and as, based on this memorable and apparently banal transmutation, a personal portrait suddenly flourishes much more certain than what we try to show when we go out into the street. Bush, a lover of these strained details, only apt for refined voyeurs, magnifies these anecdotical realities and places them under the microscope’s glass : he has pictured, with the maximum amplification, every kind of business card of every kind of person, including the famous, in the series Portraits Business Cards (1998), and has gone to Los Angeles’ most important trait in Prop Portraits (2000) to portray in situ buyers who pose proudly with the objects they have just acquired which, in context still belong to the market and at the same time also belong to someone in real life who redefines them and who, in their turn, serve as a symbol for their new owners; thus, with the series Envelopes (1994-95) he explored all kinds of envelopes, once again what people wanted to show and what they tried to hide; not in vain, his first important work was the series Bonnettstown (1986), an indirect portrait of the people who lived in an Irish mansion based on a photographic journey through their solitary stays. Andrew Bush lives and works in Los Angeles and has been exhibiting since 1984 in joint exhibitions and, since 1986, in individual exhibitions. His work is on show in museum collections such as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, in San Francisco, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Internacional Center of Photograhy in New York or the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA), in Los Angeles, amongst many others.
