Aquesta exposició de fotografia mostra gran part de la sèrie Vector Portraits de l’artista Andrew Bush (St. Louis, Missouri, 1956) en què s’hi presenten més de 40 peces de diferents tamanys. Coquetejant amb les fronteres del periodisme, l’antropologia i l’art conceptual, Bush retrata, durant gairebé tota la dècada dels noranta, desenes de conductors que transiten per la ciutat de Los Angeles i voltants, en plena carrera. Per fer-ho utilitza una càmera analògica de mig format, muntada en el seient del copilot del seu cotxe juntament a un potente flash, especialment adaptats per aconseguir el màxim detall possible a l’hora de caçar els conductors, sempre de perfil i sempre en direcció oest per aprofitar el sol. El modus operandi és senzill, quan Bush detecta un cotxe que s’adapta a les necessitats del moment o captiva el seu interès per algún motiu especial, es sitúa al seu costat, iguala velocitat i dispara. L’objectiu és evidenciar les fisures existents entre allò públic i allò privat, l’aqui i l’ara, la possibilitat d’espionatge a “l’altre en el seu món” -sobretot perquè un cop a dins del cotxe acostumem a desar la màscara social a la guantera- en un context en què la mirada fixa en la carretera, la velocitat i l’hermetisme que proporciona el vehicle en tant que extensió de la teva pròpia casa, ofereix una il•lusió de privacitat infranquejable i un despreci cap al voyeurisme potencial, però, al cap i a la fi, d’una el•loqüència visual que Bush, amb aquesta sèrie posa en evidència de manera radical. Aquesta sèrie ens mostra, amb tot luxe de detalls, que per molt que un condueixi a gran velocitat i per molt que es cregui resguardat per aquest no-lloc pèrpetu i aixoplugat per les parets del vehicle, en realitat s’està exposant a la mirada de l’altre de la manera més crua, primer perquè ningú no s’ho espera, segon perquè ningú no ho fa: només manca el voyeur. Bush amplia les imatges resultants a gran format i, malgrat l’alçada sempre és la mateixa, l’amplada ve determinada per
l’enquadrament de la càmera, sempre atzarosa doncs mai se sap exactament què és el que la càmera està veient. Aquesta recerca del retrat perifèric, de la recol•lecció de dades a partir d’objectes, en el cas de Vector Portraits, a patir del vehicle com a extensió de la persona, ha estat sempre el leit motiv de l’obra de Bush. El trànsit que realitza l’objecte entre el seu status de cosa pública i cosa privada i viceversa i com, a partir d’aquesta transmutació ontològica i aparentment banal, floreix de sobte un retrat personal molt més eficaç del que pretenem mostrar quan sortim al carrer. Bush, amant d’aquests detalls esmunyedissos i només aptes per voyeurs refinats, magnifica aquestes realitats anecdòtiques i les col•loca en el vidre del microscopi: ha retratat, amb ampliacions al màxim, tot tipus de targetes de visita de tot tipus de persones diferents, inclosos famosos, en la sèrie Portraits Business Cards (1998), ha anat als encants més grans de Los Angeles en Prop Portraits (2000) per retratar in situ compradors que posen orgullosos amb els objectes que acaben d’adquirir i que, pel context, encara pertanyen als encants i al mateix temps ja els pertanyen a ells, que els re-defineix i que, recíprocament, serveixen d’etiqueta pels seus nous amos; amb la sèrie Envelopes (1994- 95) explora tot tipus de sobres, una vegada més, el que es vol mostrar i el que vol amagar; no és gratuït que la seva primera sèrie important fóra Bonnettstown (1986), retrat indirecte dels habitants d’una mansió irlandesa, a partir d’un recorregut fotogràfic a través de les seves estàncies solitàries. Andrew Bush viu i treballa a Los Angeles i exposa des del 1984 en col•lectives i, des del 1986, en individuals. La seva obra està present en les col•leccions de museus com el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York, el San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a San Francisco, el Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres, l’International Centre of Photography de Nova York o el Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art (LACMA), de Los Angeles, entre d’altres entitats.
